2010 New Year
Happenings in Bucerias
On Sunday, January
17th, Manos de Amor
will
hold a huge bazaar at the orphanage. This is your
chance to see our beautiful new home and maybe find
some great bargains. Directions are: The orphanage
is located at the corner of Rio Balsas and Rio
Compostela in Colonia Tules Dorado in Bucerias. To
get to the
orphanage, take Rio Colorado, the
street directly across the highway
from Billy’s
Gym that passes between Lavanderia Bucerias and the
llantera (tire repair). After about 5 blocks, you
will cross over
the canal. Go another 3 blocks.
On the right hand corner, there is a
house with
swans on the wall. On the telephone pole across from
it,
you will see a sign with a red arrow
directing you to Casa Hogar.
Turn right at this
corner. Go one block and turn left. You should
continue to see the signs at each corner. Go two
blocks. On your
left is a small tienda called Los
Potrillos. Opposite the store, turn
right. The
orphanage is one block, on your left. The phone
number
there is 329-298-3680.
January 16th, begins the Festival of Our Lady of
Peace in Bucerias.
This
is held in the plaza in downtown Bucerias. On the
first night,
there will be fireworks, including a
"castillo". This is a wooden
stucture resembling
a castle, entwined with fireworks. The lower
level is lit and, the fireworks go off at each level
until, reaching
the top, they shoot off into the
sky. Most of the downtown streets
are blocked off
for booths, carnival like, for rides, food,
novelties,
etc. The festival ends on the 24th. On
that day, around noon, the
boats come in from La
Cruz to the beach downtown. There is a parade.
including a representative of Our Lady of Peace and
her consort. The
parade ends at the church with
the boaters coming for the blessing.
On this, the
final night, there is another castillo. Usually, the
"toro" is included. This is a man, with a bull's
head, who runs
through the crowd. Both his
costume and the head are full of
fireworks
shooting off into the crowd. Rumor says that it is
good
luck if the fireworks hit you. Personally, I
would prefer to watch
from a distance! There is
usually entertainment in the plaza every
night.
The schedule varies so, just head for the plaza and
enjoy what
is happening.
The First
Annual Taste of Riviera Nayarit and Bucerias Chalk
Art Walk
will combine great taste in food and
great taste in art. It takes
place from January
20 through the 22nd, on a Bucerias city street
closed to traffic for the 3-day event. Popular area
restaurants
Riviera Grill, Ernestos Good Grub,
Friscatti/Bistro Deli, Xocolat,
Eva's Brickhouse,
El Oasis Sports Bar, Adriatico, Todo Verde, Shamrock
Pub, Pie In The Sky Bakery, Cafe Paraiso, Philo's,
Blue Bay, Posada
Bucerias, along with caterers My
Mexican Kitchen and Alfredo will be
serving up
tasty bites and specialties street side. Meanwhile,
chalk
artists from around the world draw amazing
renditions directly on the
street. The theme this
year, Out of the Pacific, will surely be an
opportunity for the artists to use the bright colors
found in the
pacific wildlife and fauna.
Featured are Lori Escalera www.thestreetpainter.com
and
www.youtube.com/loriescalera, Lorelle Miller,
Julio Jiminez and
Antonio Collantes. The 3 day
event will have something for everyone.
There
will be an area for spectators to demonstrate their
own skills
at chalk drawing, with chalk and
aprons available for purchase or they
can just
sit, relax and watch the artists at work while
enjoying the
Tastes of Riviera Nayarit. The price
range for each taste will be
between 10 - 30
pesos with water and soft drinks available for
purchase as well as there being a beer garden
nearby. On Friday, the
22nd, The Taste will be
closed to make room for chalk art workshops.
The
artists will be giving instructions to over 20
children as they
make a large mural and local
professional artists will be given
pastels and
chalks and taught techniques such as trompe l'oeil
(the
art of blending chalk). Patrons from the
U.S., Canada and Mexico, as
well as companies
such as BestofBucerias.com have purchased the chalk
and sponsored these workshops to encourage the
promotion of this art
in Bucerias, particularly
at the plaza in the center of town. There
will be
an Awards Cocktail Party and Press Reception at
Adriatico's on
Friday evening at 5pm. Tickets are
available at 300 pesos and includes
2 cocktails
with wonderful appetizers. A $1,000.00 usd first
place
prize and a $500.00 usd second place prize
will be awarded. The
cocktail party will also
feature a discussion by Lori Escalera on the
history of what is known as the Art of Madonnari and
how these
festivals can boost the economy in
towns such as Bucerias. Join the
crowd on January
20th and 21st from 12 noon to 6pm for The Taste of

After a brief respite, Bahia Home
Care, is
taking new clients again. If you are ill, injured or
dealing with
disability it can't hurt to give them a call and see if
there is
anything they can do to help with your care, equipment,
education or
your quality of life.
Sometimes a new perspective can be all you
need. If you are remodeling or building, they could
advise you on
making your home more accessible. This is something
people of all
ages should be thinking about. Anyone can break a leg
and be in a
wheelchair for weeks. Accessibility doesn't mean ugly.
If it is done
right, it can just enhance the beauty of your home. The
initial
consultation is free of charge. Their number in Bucerias

For those of you who are not familiar with El Grito,
Hidalgo and
several educated criollos were involved in a planned
revolt against
the Spanish colonial government, and when the plotters
were betrayed,
he declared that war should be waged against the
Spaniards. Just
before midnight on September 15, 1810, Hidalgo ordered
the church
bells to be rung and gathered his congregation. Flanked
by Ignacio
Allende and Juan Aldama, he addressed the people in
front of his
church, encouraging them to revolt. The exact words of
the speech are
lost; however, a variety of "reconstructed versions"
have been
published. Hidalgo is believed to have cried: "Long live
Our Lady of
Guadalupe [a symbol of the Amerindians' faith], death to
bad
government, and death to the Spaniards!" The Battle of
Guanajuato, the
first major engagement of the insurgency, occurred 4
days later.
Mexico's independence would not be recognized by the
Spanish crown
until September 27, 1821, after a decade of war.
Each year on the night of September 15, the President of
Mexico
re-enacts the event by ringing the bells of the National
Palace in
Mexico City. He repeats a cry of patriotism based upon
the "Grito de
Dolores" from the balcony of the palace to the assembled
crowd in the
Plaza de la Constitución, or Zócalo, one of the largest
public plazas
in the world. This event draws up to half a million
spectators. On the
dawn of September 16, or Independence Day, the national
military
parade starts in the Zócalo, passes the Hidalgo Memorial
and ends on
the Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s main boulevard. A
similar
celebration, albeit on a smaller scale, occurs in cities
and towns all
over Mexico. The mayor (or governor, in the case of
state capitals),
rings a bell and gives the traditional words.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2009, people around the
world are
invited to turn off their lights for ten minutes from
9:50pm to
10:00pm in their local time zone. This is to show
solidarity for the
need to conserve and care for the planet.
Chris of Blue Bay and Ruben from the Argentine BBQ
(formally located
on Galeana) have joined forces and opened El Bodegon.
They are located at Francisco Madero # 30 next door to
the back entrance of the Centro de Salud, across the
street from Carmelita's. Featured are the famous Shrimp
Burritos and Argentine BBQ. Bring a beer or your own
wine and relax and enjoy!

BBCC gave out 30 packages, and United Women of the
Bay handed out 20 packages. Many people were turned away
as there weren't enough packages to go around. So, the
need is still there. Everyone has told us that the need
in September will be even greater as the school year
begins. We currently have a total of $16,000 pesos.
After this week we will have enough funds for two weeks
which only takes us to September 12, Some of the stories
we have been hearing are that some families have not
eaten in days and drinking only tap water. Also some
people are walking for miles just to receive some food
to feed their families. Any and all cash donations are
still being accepted by all officers of Amigos de
Bucerias. All food donations sites are still accepting
anything you can give. There are a couple of new food
donation sites.
They are Sandrina's and ACTINVER offices at Plaza
Flamingos, Plaza
Santa Maria, and Plaza Marina. Please, lets not have the
food drive
"dry up" now as the need appears to be greater than
ever.
For those of you that are not here at the moment, you
can still donate
funds through Karen Knapp's pay pal account. Contact her
at
kwschopf@msn.com.

Swine Flu Epidemic in Puerto Vallarta Mexico
Check this site for news about Puerto Vallarta and
the flu. It needs
to be sent to all the people who are so worried. I keep
hearing
rumors about a case or two in Jalisco and Nayarit but
there are none
here.
Check this site for an
interview with a PV doctor about the flu
problem. Also, just received this news from friends who
left from PV airport today: There is a medical form and
exam line. You must fill out the form and have your
temp taken and they look you over before they will stamp
your form. Then, only with that form can you get in the
checkin line.
Due to the flu problem, the Altruism
Festival has been postponed until further notice. It may
be rescheduled later in the year. If you have purchased
tickets, please return them to the person you purchased
them from to receive a refund.
Those of us selling tickets have been asked to return
all tickets to
the Festival Committee. Valiene

All the restaurants in the

to close from today May 1 through the 5th.
Apparently, if they open, they risk losing their

restaurant is open.

April 6 in Bucerias
I just returned from having spent two
weeks in Bucerias. This is the
third time that I have stayed in Bucerias and am
thinking of returning
next year. Each year I have eaten at Dugaral's.
However after last
week's experience, I will never eat there again or
recommend the
restaurant. The waiters were rude, the service was
terrible, the
lobster was inedible, the price on the bill did not
match the price
listed on the menu and we were charged for drinks that
we didn't
order. We sent the lobster back and the waiter told us
that he tasted
it and it was good. As we left the women at the cash
table and the
waiters laughed at us. This restaurant should not be
recommended.

March 1 in Bucerias
I have debated about sending out this information but, I
feel that it
is so horrible that you all should know. I am not going
to name the
individuals involved. I am sure the local gossip will
provide that.
A man, norte americano, who dislikes his neighbors cats
because, he
claims, they mess in his yard, took a four month old
kitten, wrapped
it in a tarp, stuffed it in a plastic bucket, which he
overturned and
placed a brick on top. He then padlocked his garage and
left for a
four day visit to Guadalaraja. Fortunately, the
neighbor, searching
for the kitten heard it crying. With help, she broke
the padlock off
the garage and rescued the kitten, who is apparently
doing well. I
have verified this with the person who was caring for
the kitten as
well as various neighbors. It is not just a rumor. It
is a fact of
one man's inhumanity to a defenseless animal.

Narcotics and
over $59 Million in Drug Money Seized Mexico City,
February 25, 2009 – Today the U.S. Department of Justice
announced the arrests of 52 individuals, bringing the
total to 755 members and associates of the Sinaloa
Cartel arrested across the U.S. during a multi-agency
law enforcement investigation known as “Operation
Xcellerator.”
This 21-month operation could not possibly have been
done alone,”
said Chargé d’Affaires Leslie Bassett. “Operation
Xcellerator
illustrates the United States and Mexico working
together to
strengthen our borders and attack violent criminal drug
networks at
every level. Cracking down on the cartel’s U.S.
distribution networks
will have a direct impact on criminals’ ability to sell
drugs in the
United States and funnel profits back to Mexico.
“The United States will continue to go after drug
traffickers wherever
they operate, through our domestic law enforcement
agencies, and by
sharing information with our Mexican counterparts.
Together, Mexico
and the United States will succeed in breaking down the
pernicious
criminal networks that threaten both our nations.”

For 20 years the residents of Playas Punta Negra,
Careyero, Malinal,
and Litibu have helped to protect nesting turtles and
their eggs from
encroaching development and black market egg thieves.
One special man
has made this his life's mission: Licensed Biologist
Gilberto Galindo
Castro. With permission from SEMARNAT, the volunteers of
Grupo
Ecologico Manos Unidas de Litibu, assist Gilberto in
rescuing the
endangered species of Leatherback, Hawksbill, Careryos,
and the Olive
Ridley Tortugas. These magnificent creatures are
ancestors of
pre-historic times, and have chosen this location to
nest and
reproduce future generations. This is not an
eco-education program
for tourist, but the real deal: all conditions are
natural, with only
minimum human intervention. Biologist Galindo Castro has
an
incredible 93% success rate of eggs to hatchlings. Still
only 1-3% of
hatchlings survive the walk to the water, the roll of
the surf, and
the many predators waiting to eat them as they swim
towards the
international currents 2 miles off-shore. From there,
they travel the
planet, returning after 8 years to mate and lay eggs.
Boat motors,
fish netting, plastic refuse, and development of the
coast line are a
constant threat to their survival. The Sun Hill
Foundation of New
York and California has generously provided a challenge
grant of up to
$2,500 for each dollar contributed to Grupo Ecologico
Manos Unidas de
Litibu. So far, they have raised $1,500 from private
donors. Please
go and enjoy yourself at this event, and help them meet
their goal.
Funds raised will provide ongoing support for program
needs.

Crime in Bucerias Update
Much as we would prefer not to have to
say this, there is crime in
Bucerias. I have recently heard of burglaries and an
attempted purse
snatching from a moped. I have personally received two
extortion
letters demanding a large sum of money. Now, with the
carnival in
town, you must be even more careful. Do not carry a lot
of money and
credit cards with you. Do not leave cash and jewelry
laying around
your house or apartment. Lock your doors and gates, not
just at night
or when you are leaving. Do it all the time. If anything
bad should
happen, go to the police and to your consular agency.
La Pajarita, this Saturday, January 17th, will have
Alfredo and Zoe
performing their Latino-Swing Music from 7:30 - 9:30 pm.
In addition
to the regular menu, there will be a special, 3 course
menu for $250
pesos. Reserve a table for dinner at:

or call: 322-158-4341 cell, or 329-295-5736.

Week of October 1 2008 in Bucerias
I could have used the subject "yes,
there are angels" but, then, you
might not have read it. Manos de Amor has found an
angel. Guadalupe Dipp, who many of you know, has helped
many organizations in this area including schools,
libraries, etc. Last year, she gave away nearly 200 new
computers to schools in the area. She is a well known
architect and builder with offices in Mexico and the
United States.
We met with her today and Lupe has agreed to match,
pesos for peso, or dollar for dollar, every contribution
we receive to finish building
the Manos de Amor orphanage. She is in the process of
building a new
development on Ave. Estaciones, out beyond Las Parrotas
called Casa a la Carta. She is going to divert part of
her construction crew to
begin work on our orphanage building, starting tomorrow.
Many people
have prayed for this type of assistance but, it is still
hard to
believe that it is actually going to happen. For those
of you who may
not be familiar with this project, please go to our
website
www.manosdeamor.com.
You will read the story of how this
began, four
years ago. There are also pictures of the children and
of the
construction, to date. We actually started construction
in January,
2008, and Lupe predicts that it will be completed in
January, 2009.
Now, we ask for your donations, knowing that Lupe will
match them.
She has also offered the use of her warehouse in Puerto
Vallarta to
store donations of furnishings that can be used in the
completed
orphanage.
We cannot begin to express our gratitude to Lupe for her
generosity.
And, to all of you, who have helped us to reach the
point that we are
at presently.
Thank you all.

donations

The U.S. Embassy has received information that numerous
demonstrations
may occur in Mexico on or around August 5, 2008, to protest the
scheduled execution in Texas of prisoner José Ernesto Medellín, a
Mexican citizen. The Embassy urges all U.S. citizens in Mexico to be
especially mindful of demonstrations taking place in their town or city,
or in areas to which they intend to travel.
Travelers should be aware that various political activists abroad
frequently seek to use public demonstrations to forward a variety of
political objectives and that it is likely that such activists may use
the occasion of anti-execution demonstrations to raise other issues
involving the United States or to incite anti-U.S. sentiment in general.
The Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners,
and such actions may result in detention and/or deportation. Travelers
should avoid political demonstrations and other activities that might be
deemed political by the Mexican authorities. We wish to remind American
citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn
confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens
are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible,
and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations.
The Department of State urges American citizens to take responsibility
for their own personal security while traveling overseas. For the latest
security information, Americans travelingabroad should regularly monitor

This from the US
Consulate:
Overseas Absentee Voting Act now to register to vote and request an
absentee ballot for the 2008 presidential and general elections!
Eligibility to Vote
Generally, all U.S. citizens 18 years or older who are residing
outside the United States during an election period are eligible to
vote absentee in any election for Federal office. Some states allow
overseas voters to vote in state and local elections as well.
http://www.fvap.gov/
Voting eligibility and residency requirements are determined by the
various U.S. states, and are available on-line at
http://fvap.gov/pubs/vag.html. Your "legal state of residence" for
voting purposes is the state where you last resided immediately prior to
departure from the United States. Voting rights extend to overseas
citizens even though they may no longer own property or have other ties
to their last state of residence, and even if their intent to return to
that state may be uncertain. For those who have never resided in the
United States, sixteen states allow certain U.S. citizens to register
where a parent or spouse would be eligible to vote.
Voter Registration & Requesting an Absentee Ballot
Voters who have not yet registered to vote and requested an absentee
ballot should do so now.
1. Complete the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) using the
instructions for your state in the Voting Assistance Guide. You may pick
up a hard copy of the FPCA from any U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or use
the online version.
2. Sign, date and mail the completed FPCA to the address listed
in the Voting Assistance Guide. If you are sending the FPCA through
international mail, please affix appropriate airmail postage.
Alternatively, you can print out a postage-paid address label and ask
any U.S. Embassy or Consulate to send your FPCA postage-paid through
diplomatic pouch or the military postal service. Some states allow
voters to send in the FPCA by fax, but they also require you to send in
the hard copy by mail. Follow your state's regulations precisely.
3. Send in a new FPCA if you have moved or changed your name
since the last time you voted.
4. Check your state's voter registration verification website
http://fvap.gov/vao/stregissites.html , or follow up directly with
your local election officials, to confirm that you are registered.
Voting Your local voting officials should mail your absentee ballot 30
to 45 days before the November 4 general election. Return your voted
ballot as early as possible. Be aware of your state's ballot receipt
deadline, as well as any postmarking requirements.
Emergency Ballots
The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) serves as an emergency
ballot for voters who registered in time but fail to receive an official
ballot from local election officials. Please note: You must register to
vote and request an absentee ballot by your state's deadline - usually
30 days before the election - to be eligible to use the FWAB. We
strongly recommend that voters who have not received their ballot by
October 15 complete and return the FWAB to ensure your vote is received
in time to be counted.
Questions?
The official U.S. government website for overseas voters is the
Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website at
http://www.fvap.gov.
The Voting Assistance Officer at the United States Consulate in
Guadalajara is also always available to answer questions about
absentee voting.
To contact the Voting Assistance Officer, call (011 52 33 3268 2273) or
send an e-mail to acsgdl@state.gov

From the Turtle Association:
Please participate in the conservation and protection of endangered
marine sea turtles found in all oceans and beaches of Mexico. In Nayarit
State, sea turtle nesting season is underway June through December.
Females come ashore, primarily at night to excavate a nest, lay their
eggs and bury them before returning to sea. Male turtles remain at sea.
All six species of sea turtles, which nest in Mexico, are endangered
worldwide. The reproduction of baby sea turtles is critical to their
survival. Your support during the turtle reproductive season is very
important.
If you see a turtle on the beach:
Turn off all lights (flashlights, lighters, and spotlights) that could
disturb the sea turtle as she arrives on the beach or is leaving the
beach after she lays her eggs. Reduce ambient noise, distinguish
cigarettes, and minimize activity in the vicinity of the turtle.
Control dogs and children.
If you see a turtle on the beach, do not touch her, stay at least 15
feet away, and let her finish laying her eggs undisturbed before she
returns to sea.
Sea turtles are frightened of light flash from cameras, do not take
photographs or shine flashlights into their eyes.
During sea turtle nesting season, minimize bonfires on the beach.
If you walk on the beach at night with a flashlight, place a red
filter over the light to reduce the brightness. Turn off outdoor
lights or face lights downward or use amber light bulbs to reduce
glare. If you find sea turtle hatchlings on the beach, do not keep in
captivity or put directly into the ocean. They need to be placed on
the sand above the high tide line facing the waves so they can scuttle
into the ocean across the sand into the oncoming surf. This journey is
critical as they imprint on their natal beach and will return to lay
their own eggs as adults. Ensure that all baby turtles enter the ocean
in this manner.
Do not relocate or move any nest contents. Only biologists permitted by
SEMARNAT/CONANP to manage sea turtle programs are authorized to work
with turtles during the nesting season.
Do not acquire or consume eggs or any products derived from the sea
turtles.
Keep the beaches clean. Do not throw garbage into ocean, especially
plastic bags because sea turtles confuse them for food.
Motorized ATV and vehicle use is prohibited on nesting beaches year
around. Denounce harmful acts against sea turtles to the Authorities to
PROFEPA. To be in possession of sea turtles or sea turtle products,
including eggs is a federal crime which can result in incarceration from
six months up to six years and economic fines from 1,000 to 50,000
pesos.

sea turtle protection, conservation, and enforcement programs, see:

of the regidores (lieutenants) of Jaime Cuevas donated 5,000 concrete
blocks for that phase of the construction. We have recently added PayPal
to our donation page of the website-www.manosdeamor.com.
On May 31st, a fund raiser was held in Toronto which raised nearly
$10,000 US to help the orphanage project. Look for details and photos in
the next issue of Amigos y Vecinos.
The water office,

the north bound lateral, turn at Comex. That is C. Zaragosa. Go three
blocks and turn left on C. Amado Nervo. Go one block and it is on the

covered in several layers of dust.

A Broken Art Free Mosaic
Workshops in San Pancho!
Ever wanted to know what to do with all those old tiles and beach
glass that you have been collecting? Well here is your chance to learn
how to use them to create mosaic works of art while helping a great
charity.
On May 24th, people from all over the Bay of Banderas will be
gathering in
San
Pancho to build a park for the kids of that area
totally out of recycled materials. So collect your old tiles, pretty
pebbles, beach glass or just come and help, while learning the art of
mosaic.
A Broken Art will mosaic the park benches, tables and surrounding wall
of this new park and we need your help. This will be a PARTY, complete
with music, free food and refreshments and of course
lots of fun!
For more information contact
Christy
If you cannot not attend, but have material that you would like to
donate, drop off bins will be located on the porch of A Broken Art.
Simply sort out material into the following categories:
Pebbles, Beach Glass, Household Tile, Beach Tile.
Materials must be separated into the following color groups: blue,
green, white, brown. Reds, yellows and oranges can be mixed together.
Please separate beach tile from household tiles. This will be a fun
experience for the whole family and for all ages, so let's help the
kids of San Pancho and get a FREE MOSAIC WORKSHOP too!
