Portobello / Isla Grande
The Portobello and Isla Grande area is one of Panama’s beautiful
Caribbean areas. Clear waters, palm trees, and rich history are abundant in
this area.
 Portobello
Portobello is a small village on the coast looking out over the Caribbean
and several islands. However, the history of Portobello makes it one of the
most important areas in the settling of the Americas. Named by Christopher
Columbus as “Puerto Bella”, or “Beautiful Port” is was home to the Spanish
conquers and virtually all the gold and silver the Spanish sent to Europe
went through this area.
The “Counting House” was used to count and inventory the riches before being
sent on to the king.
The remains of numerous forts with their canons still pointed to the sea are
scattered throughout the area and easily accessible.
 Isla
Grande
Isla Grande is a beautiful small island accessible with a 5 minute boat
ride from the mainland. The island features beaches, a small village with
several quaint hotels, an elegant hotel on the ocean side and trails through
the island jungle.
Its slow paced way of life draws travelers that want to relax in the
Caribbean without sacrificing the normal amenities. Hotels, restaurants and
shops surround the dock.
