| Isla Mujeres Mexico |

The Mayan people consider Isla Mujeres the home of
Ix Chel, the Mayan goddess of fertility, the moon, love and medicine.
The island is accessible via a 15-minute ferry crossing from the Puerto Juarez
or Gran Puerto ferry ports.

Isla Mujeres is approximately 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. Isla Mujeres is
the place of choice for many visitors seeking sand, sun and entertainment of the
Caribbean coast without the crowds and hustle and bustle of Cancun and other
Yucatan Peninsula areas.

Your entry to Isla, is a long wooden dock decorated with a string of brightly
painted boats, swaying gently along the shoreline.

Isla Mujeres
remains a fishing village where you can observe fisherman departing early in the
morning to return with an abundance of seafood served by the many restaurants
throughout the island.

Isla Mujeres features some of the finest beaches in the world, lodging to suit any
budget, a multitude of dining choices,
nightlife and beauty rarely found at
other Caribbean destinations.

You can lounge on the fine white sand beaches by day and enjoy dining, dancing,
shopping or just strolling the narrow town streets by night.
Friendly people and visitors from all over the world inhabit this relaxing
oasis.

You can sit
along the 4 block long night life corridor, for dinner or to simply relax, be
serenaded by the local musicians and chat with the many who have been coming to
this enchanted island of women year after year.

Carnival is
celebrated every year on Isla Mujeres.
The local inhabitants organized by the Casa de Cultura gather in groups to dance
the day and night away, decorating the streets of Centro with colorful costume
and rich culture.

Isla remains a fun, safe, vibrant travel destination for the entire
family, with lots of activities for everyone.

Ferry Services
There are 3 main ferry services for
getting to Isla Mujeres, operating from
Gran Puerto,
Puerto Jaurez for people,
including luggage, approximately a 15 to 20 minute ride and
Punta Sam for vehicles,
approximately 45 minutes.
Regardless of which Ferry you take, there will be local luggage transporters on
bicycles or if you prefer the centro taxi stand is located between the two
docks.
The men on bikes are trustworthy and will carry quite a load,
including small children if safety permits. They are identifiable by a
common T-shirt , and their obvious bikes with large metal baskets in the front.
They normally work for tips and it is fun to follow them thru the streets on the
way to your hotel. Upon arriving you can make arrangements with the same
bicycler to meet you at your hotel to transport your luggage back to the ferry
when it is time for your departure. Our favorite is Fidel, who you will also see
selling newspapers from his bike and/or carrying supplies to various hotels and
restaurants throughout the day.... although any one of them will do a great job
for you...including carrying your luggage right to your room...for an
appropriate tip of course.
If your hotel is further than the downtown area, a taxi is
preferably. Please review the costs of your destination, as it is posted on the
stone wall at the taxi stand, quite visible for all to see. These taxi's will be
lined up and it is appropriate to take the first in line.
The ferry services from the hotel zone in Cancun, are usually
an all inclusive trip for those whom are staying in Cancun and wish to
experience Isla Mujeres for a day. They are far more costly. If it is
transportation you are seeking, it is best to stick with one of the three above.
Magaņa Express Service from Puerto Jaurez
Costs 35 Pesos or approx $3.50 depending on the current exchange rate.
You can pay on the ferry or at the ticket office if it is open, with either
pesos or dollars, but will receive change in pesos if paying with US dollars.

Transportation on Isla Mujeres
You do not need a care on Isla Mujeres, as there are multiple ways to get around
and explore Isla Mujeres during your visit. You can rent a golf cart or motor
bike or bicycle by half or full day or week or you can take taxi's back and
forth to your destinations. The latter may be the more expensive depending on
how active you are.
There are numerous places throughout the downtown area that rent carts that seat
4-6, and motorbikes. The prices seem to be consistent no matter where you
go...so don't waste your time visiting more than one or two locations looking
for a better price. Just make sure it is fully functioning before you depart.
You will need a license and a credit card in order to rent any of them. They
will keep either in their files until your return. Prices were approximately
$35- $55 US for half and full day for carts, and a bit more for motorbikes at
our last check. Ask at your hotel about making reservations for you.
If you choose to travel off the Island to explore some of the
ancient Mayan ruins and other exciting areas along the Caribbean coast, there
are taxi services, van services and car rental services. Ask at your hotel about
any of them. There are many car
rentals located in Cancun some will pick you up at the Ferry dock for your
convenience, rather than have to take a taxi or the bus to the rental office. It
is great fun and normally safe to travel by car and it also allows you to take
those detours to even more adventures you will discover along the way, including
shopping at all the roadside vendors.
By Bus...go to the main bus terminal in Cancun and there you
can find quite a comfortable ride just about anywhere in Mexico. Mundaca Travel
and Real Estate usually has a bus schedule and information regarding private
transportation to any tourist attraction on the main land.
